A Formalism for Modeling Engineering Design Processes
نویسندگان
چکیده
ABSTRACT This paper presents a mathematical and graphical formalism for modeling computational engineering design processes, particularly to enhance variant product design in industries. The proposed modeling formalism provides a methodology for transforming a textual problem statement into a mathematical, parametric model. The explicit representation of the designer’s solution strategy is also formalized. Petri net theory provides a framework for developing a graph-theoretical tool for representing the parametric process model. The parametric process model is formally interpreted in terms of atomic process units, called design actors. The assembly of design actors according to their data dependencies results in a directed graph, called a design actor network, whose execution produces a promising solution (or solutions) to the problem. The dynamic behavior of a design process is investigated by the simulation of a design actor network. This modeling formalism is demonstrated with a simple example of caliper disc brake design for an automotive application.

Modeling and Evaluation of Stochastic Discrete-Event Systems with RayLang Formalism
In recent years, formal methods have been used as an important tool for performance evaluation and verification of a wide range of systems. In the view points of engineers and practitioners, however, there are still some major difficulties in using formal methods. In this paper, we introduce a new formal modeling language to fill the gaps between object-oriented programming languages (OOPLs) us...
متن کاملMonitoring and Diagnosing Multistage Processes: A Review of Cause Selecting Control Charts
A review of the literature on cause selecting charts (CSCs) in multistage processes is given, with a concentration on developments which have occurred since 1993. Model based control charts and multiple cause selecting charts (MCSCs) are reviewed. Several articles based on normally and non-normally distributed outgoing quality characteristics are analyzed and important issues such as economic d...
متن کاملA Multi-Formalism Modeling Framework: Formal Definitions, Model Composition and Solution Strategies
In this paper, we present a multi-formalism modeling framework (abbreviated by MFMF) for modeling and simulation. The proposed framework is defined based on the concepts of meta-models and uses object-orientation to overcome the complexities and to enhance the extensibility. The framework can be used as a basis for modeling by various formalisms and to support model composition in a unified man...

متن کاملA Formal Model of SysML Blocks Using CSP for Assured Systems Engineering
The Systems Modeling Language (SysML) is a semi-formal, visual modelling language used in the specification and design of systems. In this paper, we describe how Communicating Sequential Processes (CSP) and its associated refinement checker, Failures Divergences Refinement (FDR), gives rise to an approach that facilitates the refinement checking of the behavioural consistency of SysML diagrams....
